Silver has remained the favored new car color choice in North America for the ninth consecutive year. 2009 Survey results show that 57% of new cars sold this year have been either silver, black or white.

This year is the ninth in which silver has been the most popular color for new cars. But the silver that is sprayed onto cars these days is much more advanced than the paint used when it began to become popular. Technological improvements in paint and spray technology have enabled car makers to significantly expand their paint palettes.

Silver, black and white are clearly car buyers favorites but Ford have had some success with more vibrant colors including Molten Orange and Grabber Blue. There is a new, compact Ford Fiesta due to arrive in the US in 2010 and this will be made avaiable in a range of much brighter, vibrant colors including bright green and red as well as the popular silver, black and white.

Around 37% of the small car in Europe, where the market for this size is very strong, tend to be more varied in their colors using reds, green, brown and blue.

Auto manufacturers have also become far more interested in making their interiors more attractive by using accent colors. There are new paints, being introduced by car makers, that include glass particles that make the paint shimmer and shine.

Many believe that color can have a profound psychological effect. The color red is believed to be stimulating, improving circulation and attentiveness whereas blue is thought to be calming and soothing. There is some debate among psychologists regarding the effects of color therapy.

It’s interesting to note that around 15 years ago the most popular color was green with only 1% of new cars in silver. Color fashions come and go making it impossible to accurately predict the next hot trend.
