Silent Electric Cars Eat up the Miles
The motor show in Frankfurt last month was dominated by electric cars. It will be some time before we see a lot of near silent electric cars on our roads.
The only vehicle that is close to hitting the mainstream is the Mitsubishi MIEV supermini, first road-tested some 18 months ago. A Government study is about to commence in which 25 motorists will evaluate the MIEV for daily use on UK roads.
The Mitsubishi MIEV feasibility test was massively over subscribed with 3,000 drivers applying to take part. Interest in the MIEV is so great that Mitsubishi have ordered another 500 vehicles for next year.
Both Peugeot and Citroen have signed agreements to sell the electric motors with their badges which reflects their confidence in the technology.
Economy is one of the MIEV key selling points. It costs just 96p (about $1.6) to fully charge the battery at standard electricity charges. A fully charged battery will let you travel a little less than 100 miles, under ideal conditions. This makes the MIEV capable of an incredible 12,000 miles for about £115 ($183).
Another aspect of the electric MIEV that always attracts attention and comment is the fact that it is near silent. There have been concerns raised by road safety campaigners including advocates for the blind and elderly.
Many people who have never driven an electric car expect something close to the performance of a milk float or golf buggy. The MIEV is actually capable of achieving a top speed of 87mph. which is well in excess of the top speed limits on British roads. But travelling at speed will quickly deplete the battery.
The future for motoring is looking increasingly electric. With new advances in battery technology taking place almost daily it is likely that within a few short years our roads will begin to fill with near silent electricity powered cars, plugging in to lampposts to refuel on cheap electrical power.
