It would appear that a considerable number of people don’t actually know how car leasing works, so to give you a helping hand deciding if car leasing is for you, here’s a brief overview of the basics.

Essentially, the leasing process consists of paying to use a vehicle for a given period of time, without taking proprietry rights of it or paying the full retail value. Contract hire is a very similar process, with the only difference being that contract hire is usually for a set, longer period of time.

Your first action when it comes to car leasing would be to decide on the type of vehicle you need, depending on what you need it for (so you need to take into account purpose, space, engine size, etc). You would then need to specify any contractual requests, such as length of contract, upper fee, etc.. Generally speaking, once you have specified the type of car and contract you want, you’ll then be expected to read and sign a financial agreement. Obviously an Audi contract hire is going to be more expensive than a Skoda contract hire, so you’ll need to bear this in mind when selecting your vehicle.

You’ll normally then have to wait for a little while until the credit company makes a decision on your financial status, which doesn’t usually take too long. Their decision will be based around your previous credit score & history, your job, current financial position, previous employment, etc..

Should you be successful, you’ll then be expected to exchange financial documentation, sign any requested forms and take delivery of the vehicle. Generally speaking, you won’t be able to drive away in your chosen car until all the requested paperwork has been completed and properly returned.

Once you have finished with the car, you will have the choice of either renewing the contract, starting a new one or simply ending the contract and returning your vehicle. If you want to return the vehicle, you need to make sure you have followed all the contractual obligations and that the vehicle is returned in a reasonable condition, otherwise you could lose any deposit placed on it.
